The RTC-P2TC is a real time clock module with to temperature interface via 10K or 20K Thermistors super transducer board for HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), Commonly utilized as the heart of RTC In-PLC and microcontroller power of 5VDC or 3.3VDC such as ARM micro.

 

The RTC-P2TC board is designed to Real Time Clock to I2C bus conversion (transducer). If used properly, it will eliminate the need for an expensive board, which would otherwise be needed to carry out the same tasks.

The RTC-P2TC  is easy to install, setup, and operate. If you want to do professional Temperature readings and logging related functions while keeping time (HH:MM:SS) and day reference, The RTC-P2TC offers the features you need. It can be mounted easily via 0.125" mounting holes using 4-40 screws.

 

Simply connect the board to power connect the Thermistors to the board input and connect your PLC or Micro to the I2C bus and TC output.

 

The RTC-P2TC, serial real-time clock (RTC) is a low-power, full binary-coded decimal (BCD) clock/calendar plus 56 bytes of NV SRAM. Address and data are transferred serially through an I²C, bi-directional bus. The clock / calendar provides seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information. The end of the month date is automatically adjusted for months with fewer than 31 days, including corrections for leap year. The clock operates in either the 24-hour or 12-hour format with AM/PM indicator. Module has a built-in power-sense circuit that detects power failures and automatically switches to the backup supply. Timekeeping operation continues while the part operates from the backup supply.

Calculating the thermistor's temperature:

 

The thermistor resistance (R) should be obtained from the following formula:

 

Where V_out (OUT1 and OUT2) is the output voltage of the corresponded thermistor;

 

R = RX * { (VCC2 / Vout) -1}

 

Where; RX = 10K model A and 20K model B

           VCC2 = 3.3V model A and 5V model B

 

i.e VCC2 = 3.3V and RX = 20K @ 25C R = 20K Ohms

After finding the resistance (R) of the thermistor, all that's left to do is to plug it into the Steinhart-Hart thermistor equation (see below) and get the current temperature.

 

The Steinhart-Hart thermistor equation is derived from mathematical curve-fitting techniques and examination of the resistance versus temperature characteristics of thermistor devices.

 

Where T is the temperature in Kelvin (note: 0°C = 273.15K), and A, B, and C are constant factors for the thermistor that is being molded.

 

Steinhart-Hart Equation:

T = 1 / {A + B[ln(R)] + C[ln(R)]^3}

A = 0.001129148 

B = 0.000234125 

C = 8.76741E-08

Please be advised, the coefficients A, B, and C are constant factors of the individual thermistor. The above coefficients are given for 10K @ 25C carve 3 (K3) thermistor from Betatherm , Inc. MA, USA.

 

Finally, to convert the result from Kelvin to degree Centigrade or Fahrenheit use the following formulas:

C = K – 273.15

 

F = C * 1.8 + 32
